  • Celebrating our Lions Club of Metung 30th Anniversary

John Miles, a Lions Charter Member was our guest speaker at our February Dinner Meeting. John is a Metung local, business man who served Lions over many years and was President in 1991/2. The Metung Yacht Club was a favoured meeting place in the early days and he spoke warmly of all the original 25 charter members. Some have sadly passed away, some still live locally with Allan Sandy still being a member. John amused and amazed us with his descriptions of the regattas that were held in the early days. 12,000 visitors to Metung for the 200 year bicentenary of Australia to attend the Lions event which was truly inspiring....all organised by 25 members. It was not surprising that the Pub and Shops ran out of food and supplies. All funds raised went to local causes and John gave us an impression of how happy he was to be part of such a great club.

Charter Member John Miles is with President Andrew Bell at our February Dinner. John brought back to life Lions first years in Metung with great enthusiasm and wonderful descriptive detail

    Metung Community Art Project

Senior students at the Metung Primary School have been engaged in a community art project, in collaboration with members of the Metung Lions Club, to improve the appearance of the Metung Lions Shed, at Metung.

The shed was recently given a fresh coat of paint, compliments of Mitre 10 Pakenham Store, who donated paint, and local business, Bashford Painters, who kindly carried out the work.

The art work was overseen by local artist Kate Shone and funded by a grant from Gippsland Lakes Community Health - School Focussed Youth Support. Students were supported by several members of the Lions Club of Metung, and a donation of ply-board for the panels was received from Bunnings Bairnsdale Store.

The art work has been erected at the side of the shed, where it can be seen by visitors and locals entering and leaving the Village. The artwork consisting of eight panels, depicts a maritime theme to reflect the local region. Some minor planting is also planned along the side of the shed.

Lions President Graeme Howard said he was pleased that the School had agreed to work with the Club to improve the visual impact of the shed and surrounds. The project was a good example of the Club and the Community working together.

School Principal Rick Emondson said the students engaged in the project were very proud of the work they had produced under the guidance of Kate. He thanked the Lions Club for their invitation to the school to be involved in the project. The project was coordinated by Lion Peter Payne.

Metung Lions Support Local Fun Run

Metung Lions has for the last 8 years been the major sponsor for the Metung Fun Run, on the second Sunday weekend in November each year commencing and finishing at the Village Green, Metung.

There are three categories 10Km Run, 5Km Run and 5Km walk.

Proceeds from the first two years raised funds for the Metung Primary School Literacy Program, and to build a new playground at the school.

Funds raised from 2012 and 2019 will go towards the purchase and maintenance of a community bus for the local area.

The event caters for families, with prizes for winners in a range of age groups. There is entertainment for all, including a sausage sizzle, together with tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
We are supported at this event by the parents of the Primary School as well as the Metung Bloodhounds who staff the water points around the fun run routes.

Our club's involvement is part of our commitment to supporting the local community as well as promoting the volunteer work Lions do.

    Club Development Day

We were on track for a face to face Club Development Days. These were scheduled for Cranbourne 14th August, Bairnsdale 21st August and Trafalgar 22nd August. But with the current lockdown, possible extension and what restrictions might be on even if the lockdown is over, it’s become apparent the best way to run these sessions is via zoom. So these physical days are now cancelled and Club Development Day will be run via zoom, on the 29th August.

Links for this session will be sent out as we get closer. All the sessions will be run over one day, and via one link. So if you would like to see information on other roles you can come in and out as you need. We are looking to have 2people as IT help throughout the day. These numbers will be provided as we get closer to the day.

The one session which we cannot run, unfortunately, will be the New member forum. This needs to be a physical session, and we’ll look to run this, physically, when the Covid restrictions allow.

Contact Global Leadership Chairperson Maurice on 0419397508, or by email glt201v3@gmail.com to BOOK.
